New Book 'Paintings'

New Book 'Paintings' by local artist Paul Critchley strikes a chord with most residents of this fair city; don't expect paintings of the Sagrada Familia, though. Instead the familiarity in Critchley's super-detailed oil paintings is in the patterned tiles, winding hallways and dingy hall lighting of Example blocks of flats, evoked in striking, unusual-shaped paintings which adopt a decidedly quirky slant towards the everyday. Critchley is fascinated by doors and windows, hallways and landings - all intermediate spaces which, in Barcelona, are often shared with strangers. The people themselves rarely appear in Critchley's painting, except as shadows or a departing ankle, leaving the spaces and little details to speak for themselves.
